One of the most popular states of Quintana Roo, Mexico, is located on the North coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. MUSA is an Underwater Art Gallery, near Isla Mujeres Island which features 500 sculptures mostly designed by Jason deCaires Taylor to promote coral growth. These sculptures are placed at different depths in such a unique way to experience snorkelling additionally, colourful fish, coral formations and sculptures boast experience. MUSA is accessible near Isla Mujeres via boat from Cancun.
Isla Mujeres Island
A small island 13km from the coast of Cancun is known for coral reefs and shallow water. Marine life can be seen easily like turtles, rays, starfish and an array of tropical fishes. Must-visit sites include El Farito (lighthouse reef) and Manchones Reef, which is part of the Mesoamerican Reef.
Punta Nizuc
Punta Nizuc is located off the southern end of Cancun Hotel Zones which promises the best snorkelling experience near the mainland. Some marine life like sea turtles, coral gardens, and tropical fishes are in common.
Puerto Morelos
Just south of Cancún, Puerto Morelos is a quieter town with a protected National Marine Park. The Park allows coral formations, abundant tropical fish, and larger sea life like barracudas. Snorkelers must go with certified guides to preserve the reef’s health.
Cozumel
Cozumel is a snorkelling destination that is a ride away from Playa del Carmen, which is about an hour from Cancun. Palancar and Columbia reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and are home to a wide variety of coral species, tropical fish, sea turtles, and even dolphins.
Part of the Mesoamerican Reef, this spot is known for being less crowded and tranquil.
