Things to Do in South Padre Island, Texas With Beaches, Birds and Sea Turtles

Wide Gulf of Mexico beach with white sand and gentle waves on South Padre Island, Texas

I know the worry. The beach looks perfect in photos and then seaweed arrives on the day you do. That fear shows up in almost every South Padre question.

The island reaches the mainland by a causeway that opened in 1974 and runs about 2.5 miles. Gulf beaches, a turtle rescue center, birding boardwalks and a lighthouse across the water give you plenty to do when the sand is not at its best.

These are the things to do in South Padre Island with the weather proof options first. Sargassum changes daily, so check the local beach report before you set your day.

Sea Turtle, Inc. Began With a Woman Everyone Called the Turtle Lady

Ila Loetscher, known locally as the Turtle Lady, founded Sea Turtle, Inc. in 1977 as a rescue and rehabilitation center. It treats and releases more than 100 sea turtles a year and welcomes about 25,000 visitors annually. Five permanent resident turtles represent three species.

One resident named Allison received one of the world’s first sea turtle prostheses in 2009. After the 2021 Texas freeze left more than 12,000 cold-stunned turtles stranded on the coast, the center rescued over 5,000 animals. In the 2021 nesting season it protected 91 nests and released 5,415 hatchlings.

Admission is listed at about $15, and the work matters more this year. Wildlife crews rescued more than 100 green sea turtles from sargassum on the Texas coast over the summer of 2026, so a visit here shows what the seaweed means for animals.

The Birding and Nature Center Puts Laguna Madre on a Boardwalk

The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center offers boardwalks and observation towers over the Laguna Madre wetlands. Local guides say you can spot birds, butterflies, crabs, egrets and even alligators and turtles. The island is a critical habitat for migratory birds and endangered sea turtles.

Go early or near sunset when the light is softer and the birds are active. Bring water and sun protection since there is little shade on a boardwalk.

The Gulf Beach Is the Main Event, Seaweed Included

Beach days are not the only cost. Listings show about $15 for the Birding and Nature Center, $5 for the Port Isabel Lighthouse and near $57 for the Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark.

The Gulf-facing beach is the reason most people come. Summer temperatures average 88 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and winter highs sit around 68. The island has a warm subtropical climate.

The city maintains 25 public beach access points along Gulf Boulevard and every one is free to walk through. Isla Blanca Park charges about $12 per vehicle, and one source says the county park fee rises to $15 on October 1, 2026.

Sargassum is the honest caveat. The city says crews rake it up when accumulations run high and place the dried seaweed along the vegetation line to help build the dunes. Researchers reported record sargassum volumes in the Atlantic in 2026, and Texas news in June showed crowded Padre Island beaches sharing the sand with seaweed. Check beach reports before you book a long stay.

Cross the Causeway to Climb a Lighthouse

The Port Isabel Lighthouse was built in 1852 as an 82-foot brick tower to guide ships through Brazos Santiago Pass. Soldiers from both sides used it as a lookout in the Civil War. It was deactivated in 1905 and opened to the public in 1952.

It is now a Texas State Historic Site and a visit involves 75 steps and three short ladders according to local guides. A reproduction Fresnel lens installed in November 2022 lit the lighthouse for the first time in 117 years. Another Texas town with a very different mood is covered in our guide to Waco, Texas.

Laguna Atascosa Is Ocelot Country

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge covers 120,000 acres about 25 miles east of Harlingen. It was created in 1946 to protect migratory waterfowl and now shelters endangered Texas ocelots. Reintroduced northern aplomado falcons nest there as well.

The refuge protects resacas and brush-covered dunes and coastal prairies and wetlands. It is a quieter alternative to the island strip on a busy weekend.

Winter Texans Fill the Island From October

Locals say snowbirds, called Winter Texans, arrive on the island by October. January and February are usually the busiest months. Everything stays open and the weather runs from the low 60s to the mid 70s.

A month-long February stay is easy to plan as a result. Book condos early for those months, since many visitors hunt for the best place to book. Heading to Texas for the first time? Our guide to Frisco, Texas covers the north.

Car, Uber or Shuttle? What Visitors Say

Travelers fly into Brownsville or Harlingen and then reach the island by road. A rental car can cost about the same as Uber rides especially to and from the Brownsville airport. Another points to shuttle services that run round trips to both airports.

Visitors without a car often ask about walkable dining and beach chairs near the hotel. Pick a beachfront stay close to restaurants if you plan to skip the rental.

Families, Couples and Night Owls

Families can pair Sea Turtle, Inc. with the lighthouse and a beach afternoon. Gravity Park adds a Ferris wheel and go-karts and mini-golf. Couples can aim for sunset on the bay side.

Evenings revolve around margaritas and shuffleboard and hookah lounges. The island has live music and oceanfront dining after dark.

A Cheap Day on the Island

The beach costs nothing and neither does watching the sunset. Add one paid stop such as the Birding and Nature Center or the lighthouse. Skip the rental car for the day if your hotel is close to the sand.

The Laguna Madre Nature Trail is a free boardwalk beside the convention center.

Starbase Across the Pass

SpaceX Starbase in Boca Chica sits across Brazos Santiago Pass and is visible from the island. Check launch schedules if you want to time a rocket sighting.

Things to Do Near South Padre Island in Port Isabel and Brownsville

Port Isabel sits at the mainland end of the Queen Isabella Causeway and counted 5,028 residents in 2020. It lies about 23 miles southwest of Brownsville and is home to a shrimp fleet. The lighthouse covered above is its best-known stop.

Brownsville adds two family-friendly stops. Gladys Porter Zoo opened on September 3, 1971 on 31 acres and houses about 400 species including 47 endangered ones. It was the first zoo to breed the endangered Jentink’s duiker.

Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park preserves the site of the Battle of Palo Alto on May 8, 1846, the first major conflict that led to the Mexican-American War. It has a half-mile interpretive trail and a visitor center with a 15-minute video called War on the Rio Grande. Texas runs several historic sites near the border and the Texas State Historic Site directory lists hours and tours.
